Annual Student/Alumni Roundtable: Education and Women's Rights in Afghanistan
Date & Time: October 26, 2024 | 3:00 - 4:30 PM
Event Title: Annual Student/Alumni Roundtable: Education and Women's Rights in Afghanistan
Location: In-person on the Harvard University campus OR virtually via Zoom.
Event Overview: This event marks the culmination of Harvard GlobalWE's 10th Anniversary celebrations, It will focus on the pivotal role of education in advancing women's rights. Lauryn Oates, Executive Director of Right to Learn Afghanistan, will share her experiences advocating for girls’ education amidst severe restrictions by the Taliban.
On 26Oct2024, Harvard GlobalWE was pleased to have the culminating event of our 10th anniversary celebration, our annual Roundtable, on campus, in Cambridge.
We were honored to host Dr. Lauryn Oates, Executive Director of Right to Learn Afghanistan, who spoke about “Education and Women’s Rights in Afghanistan.” Dr. Oates shared her powerful experiences advocating for and enabling girls’ education under the severe restrictions imposed by the Taliban.
Dr. Oates first outlined the multiple interlinked crises – education, humanitarian and human rights – that the gender apartheid practiced by the Taliban has created. She then described RTL Afghanistan’s responses to mitigate them: creating access for girls from their homes to free self-study courses and a virtual library and providing devices, power banks and satellites, and Learning Plus baskets with books, learning materials, food aid, and hygiene and winterization supplies. They also provide scholarships for higher education for the advanced students who are able to leave Afghanistan, and work with higher education institutions to accept transfer students, enable virtual enrollment, and contribute resources and volunteers. With their passion and dedication to their mission, Right to Learn Afghanistan is an ideal collaborator for Harvard GlobalWE and we look forward to further engagement with RTLA.
Our moderators then facilitated an invigorating Q&A session that included questions and insights from our rapt audience which combined participants in the room as well as online attendees. Discussion focused on both what RTLA is doing as well as other global challenges where such interventions could make a difference.
We would like to thank Dr. Oates as well as our attendees and our team for such a powerful and insightful discussion - one that truly epitomizes the mission of GlobalWE which is to empower women through education, dialogue, and connection.

Discussion Circle: Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War and Terrorism
This event took place on Feb 10, 2024. Registration is no longer available.
Please click here to view the recording or continue reading below for an event debrief.
A Debrief of the Discussion Circle - Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War and Terrorism
On February 10, Harvard GlobalWE hosted the third event in its Discussion Circle Series titled “Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War and Terrorism” following the sexual atrocities committed by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023. Adhering to its core mission, GlobalWE focused on a topic that brings people together around women’s rights as human rights, across politics and culture. GlobalWE members and friends came together with empathy and compassion for violated and subjugated women globally, regardless of where these GlobalWE affiliates stand on any other issue. A recording of the panel discussion can be found at the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sjw-9N_AyW0
We heard from speakers who were knowledgeable about various circumstances:
Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, Professor, Bar-Ilan University, on the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas on October 7th,
Heather Tasker, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Queen’s University, on women in Africa who are forced into conjugal slavery during war,
Charu Lata Hogg, Founder and Executive Director, All Survivors Project, on the way patriarchal societies use sexual violence to feminize even male victims in the Midle East and Africa, as feminization is see to be the ultimate humiliation during conflict, and
Annie Pforzheimer, Senior Fellow (Non-resident), Center for Strategic and International Studies, on the subjugation of women in Afghanistan under what is seen internationally as a kind of peace, even though the current state is not peaceful for women.
From our panelists and also from our attendees, we learned that sexual violence against women and girls (and men and boys) during war and for purposes of creating terror is an ongoing, widespread problem across the globe, with so many examples that we could devote an entire SIG just to the problem of sexual violence against women.
After the event, GlobalWE vowed to continue to shine a light on these horrors, and proposed establishing a GlobalWE initiative that will continue to focus on sexual violence in different contexts, as a regular and repeating part of our programming.
In one breakout room, a participant pointed out that women in the US should understand they are operating from a place of great privilege and that they have the power to help, especially by using technology to shine a light on sexual atrocities against women around the world. This is even more true of Harvard Alumni, men and women, many of whom have the privilege, power, networks, and influence to make a difference. GlobalWE is committed to alerting fellow Harvard alumni and the rest of the world to the many contexts in which women are subjugated, violated sexually, and otherwise used,in the hopes that educating GlobalWE members and friends about these dire problems will lead to change and freedom from sexual violence for women and girls around the globe. We will also continue to introduce our membership to organizations and initiatives who work with and for these women, for those who might want to take action and support their efforts.
If you have ideas for a future Discussion Circle topic or GlobalWE program, please reach out to info@harvardglobalwe.org.
Our third Discussion Circle will discuss sexual violence against women as a weapon of war and terrorism, including different forms of sexual violence and why they occur, the impact of these acts, and how perpetrators can be held accountable. Examples from the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel and conflicts in South Sudan, Ukraine, and the Central African Republic, among other nations, will be discussed. A panel of experts will share their research and analysis on this topic, followed by small group discussions.
Discussion Circles is an initiative of GlobalWE to discuss current, pressing news items in a timely manner. We work to empower women by addressing fundamental hindrances to their equality and wellbeing; in the same vein, we want to offer a space to discuss pressing topics of the day in a respectful manner. We hope you will be able to join us and participate in a robust and meaningful discussion with other people passionate about women’s empowerment.

We are excited to announce that Shannon Cohn, director of "Below the Belt" will join us for our first Movie Club+ event. She will be interviewed by our moderator followed by a facilitated Q&A with the audience.
About the Film:
In the personal & inspiring stories of four patients urgently searching for answers to mysterious symptoms, Below the Belt exposes widespread problems in our healthcare systems. Through the lens of endometriosis, a disease that affects 1 in 9 women, the film shows how women are often dismissed, discounted & disbelieved. From societal taboos and gender bias to misinformed doctors and profit-driven healthcare, the film reveals how millions are effectively silenced and how, by fighting back, they can improve healthcare for everyone.
About the Director:
SHANNON COHN is a filmmaker, lawyer and social impact producer who has worked across Africa, Europe, the Middle East & the Americas on topics related to gender equity and combating stigma and taboo. Her films and TV series have aired on PBS, Nat Geo, Discovery Channel, Amazon and Netflix. Her new PBS documentary BELOW THE BELT, executive produced by Hillary Clinton and Rosario Dawson, approaches endometriosis as a social justice issue. The film is one element of a larger social impact plan to create meaningful change in endometriosis and women's health including increased research funding, policy changes, medical education initiatives and widespread awareness. Her previous film ENDO WHAT? was called "the first step in a plan for change" by NEWSWEEK and "film of the year" by THE GUARDIAN. Before becoming a filmmaker, Shannon practiced international law and was part of the legal team that prosecuted Enron. She has endometriosis and has two young daughters who have a 7x increased risk of having the disease.

About CAMFED (The Campaign for Female Education)
Since its founding in 1993, CAMFED catalyzes the power of the most vulnerable girls and young women to create the future they imagine: for themselves, for their communities, and for Africa. CAMFED USA’s office was established in 2006.
CAMFED is a pan-African movement, revolutionizing how girls’ education is delivered. Through a gold-standard system of accountability to the young people and communities weserve, we have created a model that radically improves girls’ prospects of becoming independent, influential women. Our impact increases exponentially through the association of young women educated with CAMFED’s support. Together, we multiply the number of girls in school, and accelerate their transition to secure livelihoods and leadership. Through the CAMFED Association, women are leading action on the big challenges their countries face - from child marriage, and girls’ exclusion from education, to climate change. This unique pan-African network of teachers, nurses, doctors, sustainable agriculture experts and entrepreneurs numbered nearly 208,000 by the beginning of 2022, and is growing every year as more girls complete school and join them. By the end of 2021, our collective efforts had already supported more than 5.5 million children to go to school across Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, and millions more students have benefited from an improved educational environment across our partner schools.

This event took place on March 12th, 2022. You can find a recording of the event on our YouTube Channel.
Join Harvard GlobalWE Connect for the second event in its Women's Empowerment Fireside Chat series, which was recently launched in 2021.
The Fireside Chat series features dialogues with senior leaders of organizations serving women and girls worldwide and the challenges and opportunities they encounter in a rapidly-changing world.
For the next event in this series, GlobalWE Founder Julie Gage Palmer will interview Laurie Adams, CEO of Women for Women International, an organization that for nearly 30 years has invested in the power of over 500,000 women who are forgotten — the women survivors of war and conflict — to learn the skills they need to rebuild their families and communities.
The event will be held via Zoom on Saturday, March 12th at 10:30 am ET.
About Women for Women International
Women for Women International invests in marginalized women in countries affected by conflict around the world. We believe that every woman has the right to determine the course of her life and reach her full potential. Women experience the burdens of war and civil strife very differently from men. In conflicted and post-conflict countries, women face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination and vulnerability. We offer a constructive way for women to regain power over their lives through a program that combines informational training, skill building, and resource provision to yield tangible results. The strength and resiliency of each woman are what keep her children, her family, and herself moving forward every day. We build on that.
Registration is free, with a suggested donation of $10 to support GlobalWE programming.

Impact of Migration on Women: Perspectives from Latin America.
Today an estimated one billion people around the world are migrants – one in seven people. Over time, policymakers have tried to understand how these mass movements affect societies, economies, security, and sustainability. Women comprise almost half of the international migration population and there is a greater need to ensure that their rights are upheld. It is important to better protect migrant women and girls from gender based discrimination, abuse, and violations at all stages of migration, and fulfill their human rights.
Latin America today faces one of the largest mass migrations. More than 5.5 million refugees and migrants have left Venezuela of which 4.6 million now live in the Latin American region. It is important to understand the gravity of this situation and how it affects the lives of women from an intersectional point of view. Through this webinar, GlobalWE will host a discussion to better understand the current situation and possible solutions from our expert panel.

The Joy of Chocolate - From "Bean" to Bar
Join chocolate expert Valerie Beck (BA '90, JD '96), founder of the original chocolate tours and of Chocolate Uplift distribution and consulting, as she takes us on a virtual trip from cocoa bean to chocolate bar, focusing on the rise of "craft" or "bean-to-bar" chocolate, and spotlighting woman chocolate makers.
We'll look at how cacao is harvested, fermented, dried, roasted, ground, and more, on its journey to becoming chocolate. We'll discuss how to choose chocolate consciously, how to enjoy fine chocolate, and why chocolate was always a beverage, never a bar, for the Aztec, Maya, and Olmec people, as we look ahead to the future of one of the most beloved foods in the world.
Questions Valerie will answer include: What do you look for when choosing chocolate, such as price, ethics, cacao country of origin, cacao percentage, attractiveness of wrapper, something else? What do you think are ways to ensure that chocolate and other foods and industries contain no human rights abuses or environmentally harmful practices? And, much of taste is memory. What is your first memory of chocolate?
To partake in the "tasting" component, please purchase the "Woman-Owned" Set at the Chocolate Uplift Etsy Shop. Note: Online orders should be placed within 7 business days of the event! For non-U.S. ordering or for pickup in downtown Chicago, please Email Valerie. The pickup comes with free Golden Age cookies!
